Application Deadline December 15, applicants are reviewed on a rolling basis and the application may close before the deadline if the position is filled.

The Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is federally listed as a threatened species north and west of the Colorado River under the Endangered Species Act.  The Great Basin Institute partners with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Clark County Desert Conservation Program to conduct line distance sampling and radio telemetry as part of long-term research and monitoring projects. The Data Specialist supports the Desert Tortoise Monitoring Program through data management, pre-season preparation, GIS logistics coordination, and training of field crews.

The QA/QC checks are conducted via manual review and automated scripts, using Microsoft Access (including SQL queries), GIS, and R.

Pre-season preparation and field crew training (secondary duty): The Data Specialist will work with the Desert Tortoise Program Manager and other GBI staff to organize field equipment and training materials before training starts in March. During the rigorous 4-week training program the Data Specialist will assist the Program Manager and project partners with training seasonal field staff in data collection and QA/QC protocols as well as general field skills.
