Senior Communications Manager, Business & Operations


The New School Business & Operations (B&O) division includes the office of the Executive Vice President, Human Resources, Finance & Business (CFO), Information Technology (CIO), Campus Safety, and Buildings (Space Planning, Design and Construction, and Facilities Management). Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Assistant Vice President for Business & Operations, the Senior Communications Manager serves as the Business & Operations point of contact for the central Marketing & Communications function, executing the B&O communications needs and activities in alignment with the university’s marketing and communications strategy, guidelines, and policies.

The Senior Communications Manager focuses on elevating the operations of the B&O subunits by promoting the offices and their activities to our community of students, faculty, and staff; drafting and disseminating executive-level communications; and facilitating integration and close coordination with the university central Communications and Public Affairs team. The Senior Communications Manager delivers impact through the unique understanding of needs of Business & Operations and its constituents and community. RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities and duties for this role include:

Communications and Content Management
  • Drafting and/or editing all formal Business & Operations communications for internal and external audiences including emails/announcements, web copy, knowledge base content, FAQs, editorial content for relevant publications, speeches, talking points, presentation decks (e.g. committee meetings, professional conferences), and other related collateral; Working in coordination with the Assistant Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs or other key partners where appropriate.

  • Managing and/or monitoring the Business & Operations communications channels (e.g. web, social, knowledge base) to ensure the most relevant and up-to-date information appears (e.g. IT Getting Started Guide, Building Hours) in coordination with key partners across the university such as the central Web team and the Senior Business Analyst for Knowledge Management.

Integration and Coordination
  • Owning the strategic communication calendar for all Business & Operations units; Meeting regularly with the Communications and Public Affairs team, the President and Provost Offices, and other key partners to support university-wide coordination of planned communication touch points.
  • Regularly communicating with the central social team to ensure amplification of relevant communications at the university level and sharing of best practices.
  • Supporting unit-level branded marketing efforts through the identification of critical information, coordination with appropriate stakeholders, and content development to ensure compliance with university brand guidelines and consistency.
  • Supporting central Marketing & Communications on the execution and alignment of unit-level marketing strategy, particularly around the positioning and furthering of the central Marketing & Communications marketing plan within the unit.
  • Serving as the main point of contact and reliable advocate for the interests of each Business & Operations subunit and for central Marketing & Communications’ functional expertise and programs.
  • Supporting central Marketing & Communications on the informational needs for unit-led public relations led by the Assistant Vice President for Communications and Public Affairs and the university communications team.

Community Building and Promotion of Activities
  • Identifying and understanding the goals, objectives, and needs of each Business & Operations subunit’s constituents (e.g., faculty, students, and staff), curating ongoing activities and milestones of all Business & Operations offices to promote the subunit’s services and aligning them to the mission of the individual unit and institution (e.g. administrative co-working hubs, sustainability and energy management).
  • Connecting students, faculty, and staff through the development and dissemination of community communications and events (e.g. new hire days).

Other Duties
  • May hire and manage student workers
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, business administration, or a closely related field and five to seven years of related professional level work experience; OR equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Close attention to detail, and strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, take initiative, and follow-through on multiple tasks while maintaining a high degree of accuracy, speed, and poise.
  • High level of creativity, independent planning, decision-making, and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 Policy
